Mission of Ephyra publishing

We believe aging to be one of the most meaningful challenges to address in our time. The difficulty of solving it is two-fold.

First, the complexity of the biological processes involved in aging is enormous. Research from the last decades has only partially grasped its fundamental mechanisms, while translating them into actionable knowledge and treatments is even more arduous.

Second, there is a lack of general awareness that aging is even an issue. As Andrew Steele elegantly puts it:

its ubiquity also means ageing is the default; its inevitability makes it invisible. We see individual tragedies as friends and relatives age, and acknowledge the horror of the specific diseases that afflict them - but society is collectively casual about ageing itself. This rolling worldwide pandemic of death and suffering goes unrecognized, too large to grasp, obscured by its own enormity.

How can Ephyra Publishing contribute? We propose to publish high-quality content on the unifying thread of aging:

  • In the academic arena with our Open Access Peer-reviewed journal Systems Aging. It is intended as a platform for understanding the biological causes of aging, and fostering the discovery of interventions increasing lifespan through the use of computational systems approaches.

  • For the general public as a book publishing house, and an organizer of events, workshops, interviews. It will contribute to the cultural dissemination of ideas, thinking, and stories related to aging, but also broader scientific topics.

Team

Océane Cassan

Co-founder

Océane is a former researcher in Computational Systems Biology. She received her PhD in Systems Biology from the University of Montpellier, France, for her work on the statistical inference of gene regulatory networks in plants exposed to elevated CO2. During her postdoc in the Machine Learning for Regulatory Genomics team she developed statistical learning algorithms to predict and interpret biological signals from DNA sequence like gene expression, transcription factor binding, or the formation of non-canonical DNA structures. You can learn more about her academic career, talks, teaching and publications on her personal website.

She is now working full-time on the creation and the scientific steering of Ephyra Publishing and its academic journal Systems Aging, where she is an Editor.

Adrien Jarretier-Yuste

Co-founder

Adrien has a Master's Degree in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence from the University of Lyon, France. He then independently studied branches of philosophy such as epistemology (the study of knowledge and how to acquire it), morality or political philosophy.

In addition to co-founding Ephyra Publishing, Adrien is the lead developer of Ephyra's website and databases.
